Overview

Created and made in the USA, the Smith & Wesson Model 642 was the best-selling firearm sold by the Smith & Wesson Company in 2006. It's a redesign of the earlier Centennial model which was originally released in the 1950's, but the newer Smith & Wesson Model 642 is an Airweight model made of stainless steel that also comes in a blue, stainless finish. When not loaded with .38 Special ammunition, it weighs around 15 ounces, and its ideal for being carried while concealed.

It is among the smallest of revolvers, and its one of the easiest to use. Like all Smith & Wesson revolvers, the 642 has a double action trigger for safety purposes to prevent accidental firing.

Little guns can be a handful. The grips are small, the sight radius (distance between the front and rear sight) is short, the trigger pull is usually heavy, and the recoil is authoritative. That's all just simple physics. Most of it (except the trigger pull) is just an inherent function of shooting a small gun.

Having said all that, the 642 is a fine gun if you know what you're getting in to.

The .38 Special is a tried-and-true caliber that can be found anywhere for a reasonable price. Partially because it is not a new caliber, it has been in fairly good supply even through the recent shortage. "Range quality" .38 Special is also a very reasonable price, also.

Because of its size, it conceals easily and can not only be carried in a belt-based holster, but in a pocket holster, an ankle holster or off-body in a case or purse.

A LASER sighting system, such as LaserGrips are an excellent addition as they solve the problem of a short sight radius.
