Fortunately, one of those Big Name trainers has offered us something in between. Earlier this year, Larry Vickers announced he would be certifying several other trainers in teaching the Vickers Shooting Method for pistols. Students attending this class would then meet the prerequisites for attending Vickers’ level 2 classes.
Noticing that local instructor Chris Clifton was on the list, I signed up for the August 26th class put on by Defensive Concepts North Carolina. I attended with my stock 3rd generation Glock 17 wearing 10-8 sights, carried in a Blade-Tech Phantom IWB holster. I shot about 350 rounds of Aguila Arms 124gr 9mm Ball, and didn’t have a single malfunction all day.
The class began right on time with a brief introduction to the instructors followed by a detailed safety lecture. Correct and competent gun handling was constantly emphasized during the day.
Before the shooting instruction began, the instructors had the students line up and produce a 10 shot group at 7 yards to establish a baseline. This was the first shooting for groups on paper that I’ve done in over 9 months, and it showed. Suitably humbled, we cleared our pistols and spent a solid two hours working on trigger control. A variety of dry-fire drills and individual instruction combined to get the snatching, jerking and twitching out of our fingers, and when we put live rounds downrange again, we were rewarded with admirably shrunken groups.
The Vickers philosophy is based on a foundation of accuracy, and we were individually challenged during the day to improve the size and placement of our groups. Not satisfied with the generous A-zones on the IDPA targets we were shooting, the instructors drew small triangles to highlight the thoracic triangle, and a small rectangle for the ocular cavity box and only accepted hits in those areas.
Once we were all on paper, the class moved along quickly as the instructors continued to demand tight groups from us as we practiced the draw stroke, reloads, and malfunction clearance. The day wrapped up with an individually timed Siebel drill, with the instructors evaluating our performance.
Compared to a previous DCNC pistol class I attended, the VSM class concentrated more on fundamentals at the expense of tactics and fighting techniques. While they did teach a post-shoot assessment and scan, movement during the draw, use of cover, and shooting on the move weren’t covered. I feel this was a good tradeoff, as covering all that material in a single day could overwhelm a student and leave their fundamental skills unimproved. Compared to the 2007 class, I felt I left with a better understanding of what I needed to work on and improve.
One thing that hasn’t changed is Clifton’s talent for quickly spotting issues a student may be having and applying corrections, and tailoring the material to improve each individual shooter. Our class had a wide variety of skill levels from first time pistol owners to professionals who had attended several classes, and I believe each student left with better skills than they arrived with.
When appropriate, different techniques were presented and students were encouraged to go with the one that worked best for them. In particular, students were taught to perform a slidelock reload by racking the slide, using the support hand thumb to hit the slide release, and using the dominant hand thumb to hit the slide release. We were then timed on all three and allowed to reach the appropriate conclusion. Personally, I gave up on my dogged insistence on overhanding the slide and ordered up extended slide stops for my Glocks.
This is what to look for in a good instructor. DCNC does not teach THE way, as if it was handed down from on high, but rather A way, and they can explain why and how their techniques work without resorting to handwaving or saying “This is how we’ve always done it” or “This is how the [SEALS, FBI, etc] do it”.
A couple of equipment notes: Pistols represented included the usual assortment of Glocks, S&W M&Ps, a pair of Springfield XDs, and an H&K USP-45F with the LEM trigger. All ran well that I could see. All students carried their guns in some kind of Kydex holster with a couple of law enforcement students using their duty gear. It was strange to be in a shooting class without any 1911s or leather!
The class was $175 including a $25 range fee, and was a tightly scheduled 8 hours from start to finish. It was a tremendous bargain and I can enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who regularly carries a pistol and wishes to improve their shooting.
